In
2001, I was helping a friend of mine manage a local Health Food
Store while doing massage part time. Whenever a “new-comer”
to the holistic concept came into the store for the very first time,
this was usually the sentence that followed; “What good is
all this stuff really? My grandmammy and grandpappy ate whatever
they wanted, smoked and drank into their 90's”. This was the
most straight forward honest answer that I could give;
First
of all, during the early years of your grandparents lives they had
NO chemicals, hormones, steroids, preservatives, colors, additives,
pesticides and other artificial crap in their food, drink, alcohol
and even their tobacco.
Second,
your grandparents could have run circles around most of us today.
These were people that arose before the sun, “Worked”
a couple of hours prior to breakfast, “Ate” a huge breakfast
(real eggs, real bacon/sausage, real butter, real milk/juice, real
maple syrup, real home-made bread ...) then went back and “Worked”
until lunch, “Ate” a good lunch, went back to “Work”
until dinner - “Ate” a good dinner, and most likely
went back and “Worked” until the sun went down, six
to seven days a week in all sorts of conditions. When your grandparents
worked, they worked.
Third,
a quick lesson in Physiology. They walked or rode a bike to work
and school, and most had physical jobs. When they built their home,
they invited 20 friends and neighbors over to help dig their foundation,
“with shovels”, hammers, non-powered tools,
carried everything by hand, they used real PUSH mowers, snow shovels,
grew all their own food, hung all the clothes on a clothes line.
Your grandma walked to a well, lowered a bucket, and lifted it full,
several times a day. She bor 3, 4, 5, 6 or more children, all with
no medications. She prepared all the meals by hand as well as all
the cleaning by hand. Get the picture? The list can go on forever.
Face it, our grandparents were tough, they not only worked harder
longer hours, they did it with much less.
